UCAS applications for England up 7.7% for 2009 entry

The first UCAS figures for 2009 entry published today (Monday 16 February) show that the number of English students applying to full-time undergraduate courses at English universities and colleges has increased by 7.7 % compared to the same point last year.

Commenting on the figures, Sir Martin Harris, Director of Fair Access, said:

“Once again, these figures are encouraging. The continuing upward trend is further indication that variable tuition fees are not deterring students from entering higher education.

“As always, we will be interested to see what the figures show for applications from lower socio-economic groups when UCAS publishes these figures later in the admissions cycle. In the meantime, I would urge all prospective students to investigate whether they will be eligible to claim a bursary at their chosen university.”
