UCAS applications for England up 9.4% for 2008

The latest UCAS statistics published today (23 April 2008) show that the number of English students applying to full-time undergraduate courses at English universities and colleges has increased by 9.4%.(1) Commenting on the figures, Sir Martin Harris, Director of OFFA, said:

“Once again, it is pleasing to see continuation of the upward trend in University applications and in particular the increase from 28.7% to 29.6% of students classified in the lower socio-economic groups.(2) These figures further indicate that students are not deterred by the new fee and support arrangements introduced in 2006.”

“Institutions successfully administered almost £96 million on bursaries in 2006 and we continue to encourage students to investigate the full range of bursaries that are available to them.”

Notes:

1) This includes applicants who would previously have applied through NMAS, the admissions service for nursing and midwifery diploma courses.
2) This figure relates to English students and includes applicants who would previously have applied through NMAS. Excluding these applicants would see a rise to 29.4%
