Continued progress in widening participation is welcome, says OFFA

The Office for Fair Access welcomes the latest performance indicators for widening participation and non-continuation in the 2010-11 academic year, published today by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).

Sir Martin Harris, Director of Fair Access to Higher Education, said:

“We are pleased to see that overall progress continues to be made in the HESA performance indicators for widening participation. These figures reflect universities’ and colleges’ continuing commitment and efforts in broadening access to higher education.

“Universities and colleges often use these performance indicators in their access agreements to help them monitor their progress in increasing access for people from lower income backgrounds, and other under-represented groups.

“But there is no room for complacency. All of us working in higher education must continue to work together to remove the barriers that students from disadvantaged backgrounds face.

“We look forward with interest to seeing the HESA performance indicators, when they are available, for the 2012-13 academic year, which will be the first under the new system of tuition fees in England.”
