The Minister of State for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education, Bill Rammell MP delivered an opening speech at a debate on widening participation in higher education in the House of Commons (Thursday 15 March). In his speech he reiterated the Government’s commitment to widening participation, the achievements of universities and colleges over the past year, and future challenges.
Commenting on the speech, Sir Martin Harris, Director of OFFA, said:
‘During the first year of the new variable fee arrangements, I’ve been delighted to see a continuing commitment from universities and colleges towards improving access for those students from low income or under-represented groups.
‘Institutions have chosen to invest over £300 million per year into generous bursary support and scholarship arrangements – this is in addition to the many other successful initiatives to widen participation exemplified across sector.’
