The latest UCAS application figures published today (Thursday 19 July) show that the number of people applying to full-time undergraduate courses in England has increased by 6.3 per cent. The snapshot of applications was taken at 30 June 2007. The figures also show that the proportion of applicants to English institutions from low socio-economic groups has increased slightly to 32.9% from 32.4% at the same point last year.
Commenting on the figures Sir Martin Harris, Director of OFFA, said:
‘This is another positive snapshot showing a small but steady rise in application figures. Once again I am encouraged by the fact the proportion of applicants from England, who are from the bottom four socio-economic groups, remains stable. This is evidence that these students have not been put off university by the new fee and support regime.
‘The new student finance package announced earlier this month provides more support to many low and middle income families and should also strengthen this trend, helping students from disadvantaged backgrounds to see a clear and accessible route into higher education.’
