OFFA comment on BIS Committee teaching excellence inquiry

The Business, Innovation and Skills Committee’s has today published a new report – The Teaching Excellence Framework: Assessing quality in Higher Education. Commenting, Professor Les Ebdon, Director of Fair Access to Higher Education, said:

“I was pleased to give evidence to the Committee, and welcome their report. In particular, I welcome the recognition from the Committee that widening participation metrics should be used as part of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).  This will help ensure that the TEF supports social mobility, and does not incentivise universities to downgrade access in order to improve their teaching metrics.

“The Government’s Green Paper makes very clear that widening participation should be intimately linked to the TEF. I will continue to work closely with BIS and others in the sector to ensure we have a system which recognises that being able to successfully teach students from all backgrounds is a prerequisite to teaching excellence.”
